Dr. Montessori was the first female physician to practice medicine in Rome, Italy. As a physician she was very involved in the care of young children. Through 21 years of acute scientific observations and clinical research, she developed an approach to educating children called: The Montessori Method!
Neuroscientific evidence now confirms Dr. Montessori’s scientific observations from years ago that the Early Childhood years are critical years of development because the child’s brain is being formed most rapidly and the child’s brain is so malleable and has a high capacity to learn and change. Though certain traits are linked to genetic development, the quality of environment that the child is in, heavily influences the child’s brain to either establish or prune connections between all the growing cells.
In other words, the child is establishing lifelong patterns of how he/she processes incoming information and discharges outgoing information thereby laying the important foundational framework for the child’s physical, socio-emotional and cognitive traits to develop optimally.
The key principles of the Montessori method that are shown to be universally applicable are as follows:
The Absorbent Mind and its functioning.
The sensitive periods of development.
Need for an ordered and prepared environment
Liberty leading to inner discipline.
Concentration leading to Sustained focus.
Joy in work leading to Discovery
Importance of repetition to develop habits
Social Development.
Grace and courtesy.

"The most important period of life is not the age of university studies, but the first one, the period from birth to the age of six. For that is the time when man's intelligence itself, his greatest implement is being formed."
